The boy's father in "The Road" is not a good father. Change my mind.

All things considered, I'm glad he died. It would have been even better had he died earlier.

Film: A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Entry created on 2020-10-25 (edited 2020-11-22) Authors: steeph (376) Categories: Artificial Intelligence (2) Films (22) Thoughts (73) Toys (1) Languages used: en (257) Topics: Films (15) edit

There is something that I think most people overlook in the story of the movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I've watched it more than three times before I realised this.

I realised that Teddy (the toy robot teddy bear imitating emotions, called a "supertoy") displayed the exact same signs of actual intelligence and emotions as David (the surrogate son A.I. invention). When talking about the movie people discuss whether David is actually intelligent and actually feels emotions like a human or whether he (it?) just imitates them. But nobody seems to notice that the same question then has to be asked about Teddy. The main difference between the two is that one is marketed as a toy and one as an artificial human with actual artificial emotions. When you watch the movie and pay attention to teddy you'll notice that he has opinions of his own, will, shows fear, love, intent, ... On the journey with David he behaves just like any other sentient child character.

I believe the technological improvements of David over Teddy are mainly in looks, texture of the skin, speech synthesis and a repertoire of behavioral patterns that are expected of a boy his age. If you believe that David is sentient and can feel based on what you saw in the movie than you should also believe the same about Teddy.

Film: Stay

So sehe ich diesen Film also.

Movies That Suddenly Change Genre After A While

Entry Permalink Authors: steeph (376) Categories: Films (22) incomplete (22) Languages used: en (257) edit

I think that there should be more films that change genre in the middle of their story.

There are hardly any examples for movies that start out with one genre but suffenly change their tone entirely unexpectedly. At least once I would like to see a film that tells a family drama, then suddenly turns into a science fiction piece when somebody discovers a door into a parallel universe or something. Being John Malkovich comes close in a way. And that is part of why I like its weirdness. But it doesn't change it's mood, story telling style or subject matter at all at the time it gets weird.

There is a difference between a movie that changes its genre in the middle and a movie you watch expecting a different genre from what it's actually in. But that can work to give you the same confusing surprise. For example when I watched Victoria (2015) for the first time without knowing anything about it, I expected a mellow love story between a big-city boy and a foreigner new in the city and country. Everything was pointing towards this being the story of the film. And it is. But it's embedded in a crime story with more action than I saw coming. This dichotomy shaped my viewing experience very much, making it a trip where enything could happen and many extreme and unexpected things did happen.

I'll try to make a list of film that are actually split into two different genres. I don't know yet if I will find more than one.

  • Mickibo and Me (2005) - The lighthearted, childlike look at the political and social situation in of the young central characters' surrounding are what makes this story so nice to watch. Even as an adult who knows what's going on, it's easy to dismiss the anguish portrayed and focus on the adventue that the two kids are having. In the end the harsh reality comes too close to the story telling lead character to ignore it anymore. While I'd clearly classify the whole movie as a comedy, the sudden shift in tone for the tragic ending hits all the more and made me cry vewyond the closing credits.

These are some films that I think more people should watch.

Edit: I realised that there is no reason for this post to exist becaue that post there already became what I intended this one to be become. I'll leave the below for a bit but I'll replace this post with a redirection eventually.

I thougfht I'd just start collecting a few titles here of independent or lesser known films that I think more people might enjoy or get something out of. I don't actually check how welkl known a movie is befgore I put it on here. I'm pretty sure there will more than a few titles of independent films that havbe won numerous awords or are widely known among film enthusiasts. I just go by feeling whether I think a film belongs on this list or not. I have started this list as an addition to my list of favourite movies. These here are movies that don't belong on my favourites listr but that I still like or like to share. Actually there is no clear rule whether a film goes here or there or in a separate post. It will stay that chaotic, I guess.

This list is meant to grow slowly over time.

In This Very Moment (2003)

German – Moods: Calm (Dramatic, Adventurous, Worried)

Their step mother drops off a young girl and her younger brother at the side of a country road in Poland because she needs a minute without them. When she calmed down and comes back shortly after, the two children have disappeared. The film follows the siblings through different places, getting picked up and lost again as well as the worrying father and his wife who can't bring hertself to confess what she did/what has happened.
